The Flood – Another Love Story of Redemption
The Flood – Another Love Story of Redemption
Understanding the One true God of the Bible Series
To being, I suggest you review the first message in this series, In the Beginning God. Here is the link to that blog and it is also available as a video. This covers Genesis 1.
Second, I also suggest you review With God it is all about Relationship not Religion. This focuses on Genesis 2-3 but only about Adam and Eve. That message ended with God redeeming Adam and Eve with a blood sacrifice and sending them out into a world that would only get worse every day. And it has. Now we move quickly through Genesis 4, 5, and the into 6.
Genesis 4. The First Murder. Cain killed Abel vs 1-4. The world through Cain’s descendant continued to spiral downward as evil filled the world.
Chapter 4 does end on a high note. After their sin and the murder of their son Abel, Adam and Eve have another son they named Seth – meaning God has given us another Seed. And from his line, this chapter closes with what most believe was men realizing they need a relationship with God and that through prayer.
…then men began to call on the name of the Lord. Genesis 26: 4b
Genesis 5. The family of Adam thru Seth. We note the extraordinary ages of men—Enoch and Methuselah who was the oldest man that ever lived (969). These were all pre-flood.
From perfection where they were to live forever to a slowly declining world. Pre-flood there was an expanse above celestial waters above and encircling the world (Gen 1: 7), so there was no ozone or aging issues. Post flood lifespans shortened dramatically.
Genesis 6. Strange things going on between fallen angels and men’s daughters. It became so evil and debauched, God could take no more. The wrath of God and His judgement do not mean He is no longer the perfect God of love. It is His love that spares any of us and made a way back to Him through Jesus. The Apostle Paul wrote, it is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance. That leads us to the story of Noah.
Genesis 6: 8, 9b Noah found favor in the eyes of God. Noah walked with God. Noah did according to all that God commanded him. In verse 7:1, we read,
“Then the Lord said to Noah…for you alone have I seen to be righteous before Me in this time.”
Sad testimony to how far men had fallen in those generations.
Noah’s ARK. Genesis 6: 10-22
Interesting to note that the proportions for ships built throughout history were based on those God gave Noah for constructing the Ark. (6:1 length to width)
God told Noah to build an ark in the middle of the desert. It took about one hundred years.
What were the other people doing and thinking about this crazy man and his family?
In another message on the veracity of the Old Testament as Spoken of in the New Testament, I shared these words of Jesus found in Matthew and Luke.
“And as it came to pass in the days of Noah, even so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
Jesus said Noah was a real man and built a real ark to survive a global catastrophic flood.
God told Noah to take two of each KIND of animals. That means to of species. That included every kind that would later repopulate the earth and morph into different sizes and shape. Even dinosaur kinds were included. They became extinct during the Ice Age after the Flood.
Also interesting to note that God called the animals to the ark. Noah and his sons did not have to go round them up. They responded to their Creator— 2 x 2 because God commanded.
The Door of the Ark. Note its significance—it was the only door through which Noah and his family could enter and be saved. Foreshadowing of Christ as the only door?
I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, John 10: 9
Finally in v16, we read, “God shut them in.” – Their Creator was also their Protector and Savior.
THE FLOOD. Sources of the water =
- Rain forty days and nights
- Waters below and above the earth as described during creation account. The flood caused the formation of the continents and divided oceans and created rivers and lakes. It had never rained before then.
- 150 days water stood on the earth. Then it took months to recede, and they finally left the ark about a year after all this began.
Noah’s first act shows another reason God chose and favored him.
“Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. The LORD smelled the soothing aroma; and the LORD said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
God saved Noah and his family because they believed and trusted Him at His word. He will do the same for you if you will trust Him at His word that Jesus came for one reason—call sinners to repent. To make forgiveness possible for all who do so, He died and rose on the third day. Because He conquered death, we can now have forgiveness of our sins and eternal life in Heaven with Him and the hosts of others who have also received Him as their Savior.
Won’t you humble yourself right now before God and get that settled right now. It is the only decision you will ever make that has eternal consequences. God loves you and so do I!
For Christ’s sake,
